Dr Pepper 10 -- For Men Only

A few students have mentioned this commercial, which advertises a diet soda as "not for women."

According to this blog post, diet soda is too girly, so they're upping the man factor.

To be honest, I think the ad has the potential to be funny but doesn't quite get there. Others have thought it's just weird. What's your take? Are they playing with gender binaries and constructions of masculinity/femininity, or endorsing them? Or both? Funny or not?

UPDATE: Des Moines was one of six test cities for the product. See a DM Register blog post here.

Personally, I was a little weirded out by the commercial the first tiem I saw it, and completely shocked. I don't think this play on the masculinity of the drink was necessary to market their product. I understand that the product was produced to be aimed towards men who want to diet, but the commercial probably turned off any woman who might have also been interested in it. It could have been less subtle, such as not as "It's not for women!" at the very end.

I also find it interesting that while they are promoting this product aroun the country a mobile "man cave" will handing out the drink.
